Button bouquet: round two

We’ve already shared one button bouquet with you, and now we’re bringing you another. This time you’ll need a bit more than just an extensive button collection, but the result is just as spectacular.

You’ll need:

Buttons
Felt
Needle & thread
Ribbon
Scissors
Skewer sticks

Instructions:
  • Start by cutting flowers from your felt.
  • Thread the buttons onto your felt flowers, making sure to keep and excess length of thread on the backside of the flower. You’ll need this thread to secure the flower to the front of the stick. Alternatively, you could always use a spot of glue to keep it in place.
  • Tie small strips of ribbon around the stick to resemble leaves.
  • Plop your bouquet in a vase and you’re good to go.
This tutorial was adapted from the Spring Bouquet by American Crafts Studio.

Wedding DIY: Button table numbers

Here’s another DIY gem from Ideas that’ll help keep costs down and admiration high on your big day.

You’ll need
• colourful fabric remnants
• A4 cardboard (Something thin enough to go through your printer)
• button sets, to cover scissors
• safety pins

Instructions:
  • Print the table numbers and guests’ names on the cardboard. Keep the information at the bottom of the card so that when it’s folded double there is enough space at the top for the button badge.
  • Cut your fabric remnants into circles – the fabric circle must be twice the size of the top section of the button. Place the top section in the centre of the fabric circle. Fold the fabric over the serrated edge as smoothly as you can. If the fabric is too bulky to fold, work running stitches around the outer edge of the circle and pull them in over the button.
  • Place the back button plate over the top section and snap the two pieces together. If it is difficult to do this with your fingers, use a pair of long-nosed pliers.
  • Fold the card in half. Make a small hole through the front piece of the card, in the centre just below the fold. Insert the button shank through the hole and secure on the inside of the card with a safety pin.

Planning a wedding on budget can be a chore. That is why we’re happy to be able to supply you with high quality bridal statins, chiffons and more at amazingly low prices. All covered up – how to create fabric buttons

This quick little project from Home-Dzine shows just how easy it is to make fabric covered buttons.

You will need:
Scrap of fabric*
Button with shank
Scissors
Thread
Fine needle
Ruler
Ballpoint pen
*You will only need a very small piece of fabric. If you are matching an existing project, try to find a wide seam where you can cut off a piece.

Instructions:

1.  With the button on the fabric and upside down, trace around the button to get the circumference of the piece of fabric needed to cover the button. Put the button aside and cut the circle.

2.      Using the needle and thread, stitch a running stitch along the edge of the fabric circle. Make sure to leave a tail of thread long enough to make a couple knots.

3.      Place the button upside down right in the middle of the stitched round piece of fabric. Pull both ends of thread until the fabric snuggles the button. Make a couple knots making sure the fabric is tight around the shank of the button.

There should not be any fabric or thread blocking the button's shank so you can sew your button to your projects.

Getting creative in the haberdashery

Sometimes we get so lost in the beauty of fabrics, their complex designs, elegant patterns and vibrant colours, that we forget about the little things. The bits and bobs that help bring an outfit together, hide its flaws and complete the picture. We’re talking about the haberdashery folks and all the little marvels you’ll find there in. And to show just how versatile these gems can be, we’ve put together a gallery of the best and most creative images we can find online. Enjoy!

Ribbons, lace and pretty things – how to make ribbon bracelets

You've taken a stroll through our haberdashery and are now feeling inspired, but to what you are not sure. Why not create some of these dainty ribbon bracelets, perfect for you or your little princess at home.

Supplies
Various cuts of ribbon (depending on how many bracelets you are looking to make) at least 18mm wide
A collection of beautiful buttons and beads
Wire – thin enough to thread through the beads and malleable enough for you to manipulate
Wire cutters
Needles and thread

Instructions

Design 1
Select your ribbon and button. Fold back one end of the ribbon and sew a button hole big enough to fit the width of the button. Measure the wrist and add an extra 3cm to the end of the ribbon without the hole. Fold the ribbon back on itself and size it on the wrist. Finally, sew the button on.

Design 2
Select your ribbon, a button and some beads. Fold back one end of the ribbon and sew the cut edge, keeping the sides free and open. Cut a 12cm length of wire and thread it through the opening. Using the wire as thread, create a loop of beads large enough to slip over the button. Twist off the wire and trim wire edges using the cutter. Measure the wrist and add an extra 3cm to the end of the ribbon without the hole. Fold the ribbon back on itself and size it on the wrist. Finally, sew the button on.
