A lampshade makeover

Living room looking a bit dull? Bedroom a bit boring? Shine a spotlight on your creativity with this playful peek-a-boo lampshade tutorial.

Supplies:

                A collection of various colourful fabrics

                Bias tape

                Muslin or some other type of beige fabric

                Non-flammable fabric glue

                A ruler

                A calculator

Instructions:

1. Start by making a template. To do this you’ll need to measure the circumferences of the top and the bottom of the lamp shade and the length of the shade. Plan your new shade, determining how many strips of fabric you want to peek through on your finished shade. Now calculate measurements A and B using the following equations:

Top circumference = A

No. of strips

Bottom circumference = B

No. of strips

On a piece of paper draw a straight line that equals the length of the shade (Line 1). Using measurement A, draw a straight line (Line 2) across the top and perpendicular to Line 1. Line 1 should meet Line 2 at its midpoint, giving the appearance of a T. Next draw a third line using measurement B at the bottom of Line 1. Like before, make sure that Line 1 meets Line 3 at the halfway mark on Line 3. Join the tips of Line 2 and 3 to get your template.

2. Using your template, cut strips out of the coloured fabric.
3. Apply some water based NON-FLAMMABLE fabric glue to the wrong side of your strips and lay them onto your lampshade. Don’t worry if they overlap, the muslin will cover up these little indiscretions, but do make sure that there are no bumps or bubbles.

2. Now to cut the muslin strips. Lay your template on top of your muslin. Add a 0.65cm seam allowance to the sides, but not the top. Cut out double the number of muslin strips as you did for the coloured fabric.

2. Place two of the muslin strips right sides together and sew just the sides of the strip. Remember your 0.65cm seam allowance. Repeat for the rest of the strips.
3. Turn your strip right side out and press.
4. Find the half way point on your muslin strip and make a small light mark on the fabric using a pencil.

2. Fold the muslin strip in half lengthwise and hand sew a little tack between the two sides where the mark is.

2. Place the muslin on your lamp shade between two strips of coloured fabrics and baste the top of the muslin piece to the shade using a needle and thread. DO NOT CUT THE THREAD. Place another strip of muslin between the next two pieces of fabric and baste with the same thread. Repeat with the remaining strips of muslin.

2. Use the above method to secure the bottom of the muslin strips, but this time remember to fold the bottom corners in slightly.
3. Finally complete the look by hand stitching the bias tape along the top and bottom of the shade.

Who’s ready to go bowling for bunnies?

Whilst on the hunt for something fun for Easter, we found, and were bowled over by, these little gems from The Long Thread. Once you’ve finished adding these little critters to your collection hop on over to thelongthread.com and click here to check out their bunny round up: a list of adorable and easy-to-make Easter bunnies.

Supplies:

Cotton, twill or canvas, 27.9 x 27.9cm per bunny

Contrasting fabric for ears

Fusible interfacing, 23cm

Fabric Marker

Matching thread

Embroidery hoop (12.7cm or smaller)

Embroidery thread

Embroidery needle

Polyfill or other stuffing material

Funnel

Rice, 1/2 cup per bunny

Instructions:

1. Prep the fabrics – wash, dry and press all fabric.
2. Make your bunny smile – Cut one 14cm x 27.9cm piece of fabric for each bunny you are making. Mark 22.9cm up from the bottom in the centre of the fabric and use a fabric marker to draw the face. Place the fabric in a small embroidery hoop and sew the face.
3. Snip, Snip – Cut out the paper templates. Fold over the fabric front with your bunny’s face lengthwise, aligning the bowling pin template with the bottom edge of the fabric. Be sure to place the face in the desired spot and cut out the shape. Cut the back of the bunny from the remaining fabric, cutting along the fold again. Cut the ear fronts from contrasting fabric and ear backs from solid fabric.
4. Sew bunny’s ears – Iron fusible interfacing onto the back side of the bunny ear. Place the ear pieces right side out using a blunt tool. Fold the corners over towards the contrasting fabric and sew 0.6cm from the bottom to create a crease in the ears. Press flat.
5. Sew your bunny– Place the ears upside down and rights sides facing up on the right side of the bunny back side (You may want to take another look at the diagram quickly). Fold ears and pin them in place, making sure that they are pinned out of the way of the seam allowance. Pin your bunny back to front, right sides together. With a 0.6cm seam allowance, sew along the outside edges and 2.5cm into either side along the bottom. Reinforce with an overcastting stitch, making sure all seams are secure.
6. Make pleats in bottom – Pull the fabric at the corners to form a right angle in the opposite direction of the stitching. Press flat. Mark a line 1.9cm from the tip of the seam and sew along this line. Trim off excess fabric and reinforce with an overcastting stitch.  Turn the bunny right side out.
7. Stuff bunny – Using a funnel, stuff the bunny until it is ¾ full with polyfill or other stuffing. Make sure to pack the stuffing in tightly. Using the funnel, fill the remaining space with approximately ½ cup of rice.
