Choosing an upholstery fabric

Some aspects of choosing upholstery fabric might seem pretty obvious such as selecting a color, the single biggest factor in fabric selection. However, since it's always good to take your needs into account, here are some other factors you might want to consider.

Fabric Durability
  • Choose a fabric based on who will be using your sofa. If your pets will also be sharing your sofa with you, consider a microfiber fabric or leather as they can withstand heavy use.
  • Consider fabric durability if your sofa will be placed in a high-traffic area of the home.
  • Woven patterns hold up longer than printed ones, as do higher thread counts. Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric, and denser fabric lasts longer.

Fabric Style
  • Your fabric choice should approximate the style and character of the piece it is covering. For example, a traditional fabric would look better on a traditional style of frame.
  • Some fabrics appear casual, while others might look more formal. Choose a fabric to echo your own style or theme that you have established throughout the home.
  • Consider the scale of the pattern. It should be appropriate to the size of the furniture it is covering, as well as the room size. A large bold, pattern might work better in a larger room, while a more muted or smaller one might be a better choice for a smaller space.

Fabric Colour
  • Colour is the most important reason people choose a fabric, so make sure your colour choice is appropriate. For instance, it may be best to avoid a very bold colour for a smaller room, especially if your sofa is also large.
  • Avoid delicately coloured fabrics around children and pets.
  • To strike the right mood, consider the colour temperature. Since warm and cool colours affect the mood of the room, make sure you’re choosing the right fabric for the right mood.
  • Avoid trendy colours, unless you happen to really like them. Colour trends come and go so be careful. What if you don't consider eggplant attractive in the first place? Will you be able to live with a colour even when its popularity wanes?

Special Considerations
  • Fade Resistance: Consider if your fabric is fade resistant especially if it will be placed in a room that gets plenty of sunlight, or will be placed close to a window.
  • Mildew Resistance: Look for fabric that is mildew resistant if you live in a humid climate that fosters mildew.
  • Allergies: Consider fabric such as micro fiber for certain allergies because it is lint free and does not attract dust.
  • Pets: If you have pets avoid using delicate fabric such as silk, or any fabric with lots of texture. Select pet-friendly upholstery instead.
For all your upholstery fabric needs, visit your nearest Fabric & Textile Warehouse, give us a call on 0861 FAB TEX (322 839) or email us on fabrictextilewarehouse@gmail.com. One of our friendly and well-trained assistants will be able to answer all your questions and give any advice you need.

African Queen: an African Dream

African Queen – a collaboration between Hertex Fabrics and interior designer Nthabi Taukobong – is not only about fabrics. This collection symbolises a celebration of colour, focusing on the richness, release and freedom of the creative process.
"I am finally embracing colour and allowing myself not to be confined to follow predetermined rules," says Nthabi. Hertex Fabrics is proud to partner with Nthabi on this journey of exploration.

"Hertex is a young, dynamic company with their finger on the industry's pulse in a locally and globally changing context. African Queen features a new democracy, a unity of cultures and is a celebration of the beautiful country we live in. It is an explosion of the unlimited colour in our everyday encounters," says Nthabi.

"African Queen is an acknowledgment that we are all descendants of kings and queens. We are together celebrating the jewels that we are and are unapologetic about how bright and wonderful our lives are on this continent. As the saying goes: once Africa has captured your heart, it never lets you go."

Colour schemes reflect the richness of the African continent, with golden yellow, duck egg blue, midnight blue, rich berry, earthy chocolate, dessert beige and coal black.

About Nthabi
Nthabi grew up in Soweto and Durban and spent a year in Calgary, Canada as a youth Ambassador for South Africa. Her National Diploma in Interior Design was completed at Natal Technikon where she showed a distinct passion for hotel projects.

Nthabi's first job was with Wilson & Associates where she gained the foundation of her hotel design experience. After a 3 year tenure, Nthabi decided to venture out on her own and started Moago Interiors, focusing on the leisure market and high end residential and corporate interiors.

It was in 2005 that her current business, Ditau Interiors, was formed. In the 10 years Nthabi has been running the interior design company, Ditau Interiors' extensive project portfolio has seen her design for royalty, deputy presidents and top CEO's and directors in South Africa.

Hertex Fabrics is proud to collaborate with her on African Queen.
